Shawn Phua

Shawn Phua is profoundly Deaf, Person of Colour (POC) and an Australian citizen as he lives in Australia all of his life. He can communicate in Auslan (Australian Sign Language), Australian Signed English, Australian Sign Supported English, written English and Malaysian Sign Language. His personal interests are travelling and meeting new people. His hobbies are: LEGO, cooking and learning foreign Sign Languages used by Deaf communities overseas. Shawn is a NDIS Participant living in the Yugambeh Country (Logan Region), Meanjin (Brisbane).

As a Person with a Disability and a POC, I hoped to capture how Deaf people and NDIS Participants feel towards political and controversial issues occurred in both Deaf and Disability communities relating to NDIS/NDIA and Deaf/Disability supports through my artistic expressions used with mixed media mediums and abstract symbols. I find painting, drawing and colouring, especially calligraphy’s fountain pens ‘therapeutic’ in my leisure time.
