About Us

My Truth, My Way is a project run by Your Way Through at drummond street services. We commissioned 10 disabled artists from marginalised cultural and ethnic communities to tell their stories and share anything they wanted to say about being a disabled person from a marginalised racial or ethnic community.

All too often disabled people are bombarded by abled people’s expectations for who we can be, what we can say, and how we can say it. “Be inspiring for the abled audience, show us your struggle and tolerate our pity but don’t forget to overcome it all too, justify your access needs but be nice about it, and don’t ever get mad about how often we talk about oppression without ever mentioning disability”.

All too often disabled people from marginalised cultural and ethnic communities are bombarded by those same expectations from white disabled people. “We love your passion for justice, but never criticise us or you’re too angry. Stop dividing the disabled community. Don’t make it about race. We understand all your experiences, after all we’re both disabled!”

We’ve had enough!

This project is about providing a space for those who are often excluded. These artists are here to express their truth, their way. There are drawings, paintings, poems and written pieces.

The creators share their lives, experiences, hopes, frustrations, fears, exasperations and more.

The human experience is complex, diversity is everywhere, so take the time and explore the works and see My Truth, My Way as an insight into the lives of the creators and appreciate the time and energy they have used in contributing their work.
